Increase to the expensive car supplement

Consultation released on how to implement a new mileage-based tax

A consultation on how to implement a new mileage-based tax for drivers of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles from April 2028. The 3p per mile for EVs and 1.5p per mile for PHEVs is aimed at creating a ‘fairer system for all drivers’, given that ICE drivers pay fuel duty (which is frozen until September 2026) every time they go to the pump, but there’s no equivalent for EV drivers. The money raised will help the Government to double how much it spends on road maintenance and contributes to further investment in the rollout of electric vehicle charging points.
