Keeping your car safe
Car thefts are becoming increasingly sophisticated, but a few smart habits can make protecting your car straightforward and stress-free.
1. Keep keys away from doors and windows
Do you have a key bowl or hook near your front door? You may want to find a new spot for them. Relay attacks rely on amplifying the key’s signal, so it’s best to keep keys well away from windows, exterior walls or pop your keys in a signal‑blocking pouch or box.
2. Park in secure, well‑lit areas
If your home has a driveway with gates, make use of them or consider installing a drop-down bollard. If you park on the road or in a car park, try to park near well-lit areas, preferably covered by CCTV.
3. Check everything’s locked
With more cars using keyless entry, it’s easy to assume the tech has done the job for you. You may need to walk a few steps before the car locks and it’s a good idea to check the car is properly locked before you leave.
4. Use visible physical deterrents
The reality is that easy targets are more likely to be targeted. Steering‑wheel locks and other physical devices act as strong deterrents – they make thefts slower, harder, and riskier (and therefore less likely). Visible items can tempt opportunists to break in, even if the car is secure, so don’t leave valuables in your car.
5. Be smart about where you charge
Drive an EV? Charge it in well‑lit, monitored areas. If possible, avoid predictable charging routines as it will make you less likely to be targeted.
6. Secure your charging cables
EV cable theft is on the rise, particularly at public charging stations, so it’s wise to not leave them unattended.
