DfT changes qualifying criteria for electric car grant

Transport has changed the threshold for electric vehicles to quality for the electric car grant.

Initially, the Government said that only EVs priced £37,000 or below would be considered for the cash reduction. However, the DfT has now capped the threshold for more expensive trim levels at £42,000, with the change taking effect from 29 August.

New mileage reimbursement rates for electric vehicles

HMRC has split the AER between home and public charging, with a higher reimbursement rate for those using the public network. Taking effect from 1 September 2025, the new rates will be:

- Home charging rate – 8ppm
- Public charging rate – 14ppm

Pavement parking ban expected

The DfT is expected to decide whether it will introduce a ban on pavement parking.

Pavement parking is currently only banned in London and Edinburgh, and a consultation to expand this was closed in November 2020. No response was ever published, but the current Government has signalled its intention to do so.

Plug-in van and truck grant extended, but levels to be decided

The Government has agreed to fund the plug-in van and truck grant for a further year from April 2026.

Currently, the grant offers discounts of up to £2,500 for small vans, £5,000 for large vans, £16,000 for small trucks and £25,000 for large trucks. However, fleets will have to wait and see to find out how much the renewed grant will be worth.

Increasing number of van drivers think EVs suitable for business

According to latest research, 75% of UK van drivers now believe a fully electric van would be a suitable choice for their business.

The research, commissioned by VW Commercial Vehicles, also revealed that 62% believed that an electric van is now cheaper to run than a diesel equivalent, with 69% of those surveyed without an electric van were expected to purchase one in 2025.

Keeping Track
