What is a salary sacrifice car scheme?
Put simply, salary sacrifice is an arrangement where you agree to forgo part of your salary in exchange for a non-cash benefit, such as a car.
How does salary sacrifice work?
The payments are taken from your pre-tax income, which means you save on both Income Tax and National Insurance. However, you will need to pay Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) tax, but if you choose a low-emission vehicle like an electric car, the BiK tax rate for a fully electric, zero emitting vehicle is 3% and it remains frozen at that rate until March 2026 – considerably lower than a typical petrol or diesel company car tax rate. This will increase by 1% each year until the end of the 2029/2030 tax year.
